How to install DOINS
====================

* Download Apache 1.3 or greater (http://www.apache.org/).
  Download MySQL (http://www.mysql.com/).
  Download PHP 3 (http://www.php.net/). Note that this system
    has not been tested on PHP 4, but it will be soon!

  Configure and install MySQL, and Apache with the PHP module
  compiled in.

* Note: On a Red Hat 6.x system where you have installed Apache and
  PHP from RPMs, you might also want to grab my RPMs for MySQL and
  php with the mysql extensions. Make sure that your /etc/httpd/php3.ini
  file contains the line:

  extension=mysql.so

* Edit the file "dbconnect.php3" and change the two variables at the
  top to refer to your preferred database user name and password. Edit
  the $database variable to refer to your database.

* Create the database by logging into the database as root, and
  configure a user and password as specified in the "dbconnect.php3"
  file.

  mysql -u root -p <<EOF
  CREATE DATABASE doins;
  GRANT select, insert, update, create, alter, delete, drop
    ON doins.*
    TO doinsuser@localhost
    IDENTIFIED BY 'doinspassword';
  QUIT
  EOF

* Load the database with the schema file located in this directory:

  mysql -u root doins -p <schema

* Copy the doins source into the apache directory, for example:

  mkdir -p /home/httpd/htdocs/doins
  cp -rp ../htdocs /home/httpd/htdocs/doins

(Note: Not really sure where the dailyStuff and checkSubs file should
go ... checkSubs doesn't actually work because it hasn't been converted
from PostgreSQL yet, but I'm not sure whether it belongs in the doins
directory or not. dailyStuff should perhaps be in /usr/bin and run
from crontab, but then again I'm not sure that I really want it and
perhaps we should use analog instead ... oh well ...).

  edit the dailyStuff file to accuratly point to the location of
  your apache log files
  edit the checkSubs.php file and modify the EMAIL-ADDRESS-TO-BE-NOTIFIED
  variable

(Note: ultramode.php3 also needs fixing ... not really sure what it does yet).

  > cd htdocs
  edit ultramode.phtml and modify the YOUR-HOSTNAME-HERE variable

(Note: minutemaid also needs editing for your local setup ... should manage
to keep that since it does the daily quote and the ultramode.txt file).

  start the daemons that run everything:
  > cd apache-dir
  > crontab dailyStuff.crontab
  > nohup minutemaid.pl &

* Start apache

  /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start

* Configure *** See below ***

* Enjoy!

DOINS Configuration
===================

Once you have the PHP files installed, it's all a matter of playing with
the database.

* The first thing you want to do is point your browser at:

   http://(your-doins-web-site)/admin/

   Log in as "ray" ... password is "secret"

* Check out the "Variables" tab. Change the webmaster e-mail address,
   and you might want to change the default poll question (you can come
   back and do this later when you have some more polls).

   You should also change the various site_ variables, and have a look
   at what you'd like to set the head_bg and other colour variables to.
   This allows you to customise the look and feel of your site.

* Under the "Authors" tab, you should add a new author for yourself,
   using any name you like, and a security level of at least 10.

   You should come back and delete the "ray" author later.

   Quit your browser, go back to the admin window, and log in as yourself.

* Find a whole bunch of icons, and put them in images/

   Go to the "Topics" tab, and create topics that link to these images.

*  Start entering some stories!
